Wedding Planning: Don’t Forget the Clean-Up

So you’ve assigned a cake maker, a DJ and a toast master, but what about the post-party pick-up? Once the party’s over, who is going to clean your venue, wash your wedding linen and pack up your wedding reception decorations?

Wedding Reception Decorations

Formal venues take care of all this for you; all you need to do is swan off into the sunset. If you’re using a smaller venue or having an outdoor wedding, it will need a little more thought and planning.

First on the list is deciding when you plan to clean up. If your wedding is an all day or evening event, few guests are going to be in the mood for sweeping up wedding table decorations and washing glasses after midnight. Unless you want to hire a professional cleaning team, most DIY wedding parties opt to perform the clean up the day after the ceremony.

If you’re roping in guests to do the cleaning, make it fun. Pop on some music, provide water bottles and snacks and make sure there are plenty of cleaning products handy. Make it clear if there are items you want to keep. For venues that aren’t your own, be sure to have a checklist from the owner of what they expect to be done as part of the clean-up, and make sure you stick to it.

Wedding Linen

If you have invested in wholesale wedding linen, put a plan in place for laundering it before packing it away. As a one-off cost, it might well be worth having napkins and tablecloths professionally laundered, particularly if there are stains. Alternatively, provide a basket or bag to put them in to take home.

Wedding table decorations can be particularly difficult to clean up, especially smaller items such as table scatters. Unless you plan to keep or recycle scatters, it’s often easiest to use your table cloth as a funnel and direct them into a large bin, or knock them onto the floor and sweep up after the event. If that all sounds too much, keep your wedding tables simple and use larger wedding centrepieces and wedding favours to decorate them.

To Have And To Hold

Remember to plan in advance if any of the items you have used can be sent away with guests. Edible favours are more likely to be taken away and consumed than small gifts. Balloons or Chinese lanterns can be handed out to children at the end of the night and candles, whether real or LED, will always be useful. Ensure that items you do pack away are clean and undamaged, and provide bubble wrap or tissue paper to protect delicate items.
