Wedding Fabrics, Explained

At times, the choice can seem a little bewildering, and if you’re not a keen sewer or crafter, all these terms can be a little baffling. So here’s the WWS lowdown on the most popular wedding linen and decorative fabrics and their unique features.

Chiffon

Chiffon is the ideal material for dressing up a hot summer wedding, especially outdoors. Light as a feather, breathable and almost transparent, chiffon fabric was traditionally spun from silk, but now it’s most likely to be made from synthetic fibres or, occasionally, finely spun wool. Choose from bolts that are either 12 inches wide or 52 inches wide to use as a decorative highlight or a backdrop.

Organza

Organza, while still fine, semi-sheer and light like chiffon, offers more body and strength. It holds its shape well, thanks to its innate stiffness, and is a great choice for tying bows or adding structured detail in an area where you still want some lightness and transparency. Choose from printed, shimmering and sparkling versions at Wholesale Wedding Superstore.

Taffeta

Taffeta is less stiff than organza but has more form and structure than chiffon. It wrinkles with ease, but that, combined with its lustrous finish, is part of its charm. Many wedding dresses feature taffeta to add structure without bulk. Take advantage of its natural tendency to wrinkle by choosing pre-crinkled taffeta bolts in a huge range of colours and shades. It’s a great way to add texture and depth to flat fabrics and a plain scheme.

Tulle

Tulle is the fabric used in tutus. Net-like and with a rough texture, it’s great for adding structure and body, for example if you want to create favour bags. It’s also very affordable, so it is a great multi-purpose fabric for dressing your venue. Tulle is one of our most popular fabrics and is sold in bulk rolls from 6 inches to 54 inches wide. We also have pre-cut tulle circles for wedding crafts.

Satin

Satin, with its silk-like sheen and solid colour, is a dramatic and expensive-looking fabric that can add drama and depth to your wholesale wedding supplies. WWS stocks satin in rolls with a plain finish, stripes or rosettes. As it’s solid rather than sheer, satin looks bold and beautiful against plain white wedding linen.

Lycra

A wonder fabric when it was first invented, Lycra is a great hide-anything option that is forgiving, thanks to its stretch, and never creases. WWS sells it in large format rolls to use for table covers or backdrops. We also stock flexible wedding chair covers in Lycra.

Polyester

Polyester is a great wholesale wedding supplies all-rounder. It comes in both chiffon and organza-like versions, as well as slub polyester, which is a great choice for table covers and functional wedding linen.
