However, groomsmen can do more than play bit parts until the stag party or the wedding day dawns. Here are six ways they can contribute.
Groomsmen
- If your bridesmaids are already involved in all your DIY crafting and preparing, groomsmen can be a great help in researching and doing the heavy lifting for the big day. If you’re planning a DIY or low-impact wedding, keep groomsmen on hand to help set up tables and chairs, signage and lighting.
- Want a more unusual project for your groomsmen? Why not leave them in charge of the drinks and inspire them at the same time. A weekend project could be to create some home brewed beer or wine to serve at the wedding reception or to offer as wedding favours. Alternatively, send one or two on a cocktail making course and ask them to create a unique drink to serve at your wedding reception.
- DIY wedding decorations aren’t just a job for the girls. Whether it’s crafting unique signs using wood and blackboard paint or helping to hang backdrops, paper pom poms and lights, groomsmen are valuable helpers on the day, and some can be great wedding planners, researchers and designers. Use their skills!
- The music played on your big day can go far to set the tone and atmosphere. Your friends know your tastes well, but they also know how to look at a playlist objectively and what’s likely to get people moving. Once you’ve got a good idea of the style of music you want, whether it’s a live band, DJ or string quartet, ask a groomsman to do the leg-work researching performers, booking them and making sure they play the tunes you want to hear.
- Grooms aren’t always hugely communicative about what they want from the big day, so use the groomsmen to tap into that side of your husband-to-be’s psyche. Get them involved in planning a part of the wedding day that is all about your groom’s passions. It might be a Star Wars-themed quiz to use as an active centrepiece, an unusual mode of transport for getting to the venue or a favourite food to use as a favour or addition to your wedding feast. Let them inspire you.
- Harness the skills your groomsmen already have. If any of them draw or design for a living, ask them to help draft signage, fonts and invitations. If any combine artistic skills with a logistical mind, ask them to draft maps so guests can find their way to your venue or find their way around on the big day.
