Whether you’re hiring a portable bathroom for an outdoor wedding or trying to make the most of less than ideal restroom in your chosen venue, there’s a lot that can be done to make these necessary but not desperately inspiring spaces a little more luxurious for your guests and for you.
Lighting The Way
First up, you need to make sure that the toilets are easy for guests to find. Clear signage helps, and you can personalise this to tie in with your DIY wedding decorations. For outdoor weddings, a sign painted on driftwood looks quirky and cute, while graphic print-outs might work better for an indoor venue. To indicate Ladies and Gents loos, a quirky touch is a printed childhood picture of the bride and groom to illustrate the ladies and gents doors.
Lighting is crucial; a portable toilet in the dark is a scary place to be, especially if you’ve had a couple of drinks and have a formal dress to deal with. Battery-operated touch lights are affordable and can be fixed to the wall of your toilet with an adhesive sticker. Switch them on before it gets dark, and the batteries should last until the end of the evening. For a less utilitarian look, put an LED nightlight or small string of LED fairy lights into a lidded jar and it leave on a shelf or hang it over the door handle with wire.
Thoughtful Touches
Add a touch of luxury to bathrooms with a basket of goodies for guests to use. Nail files, mints, hand sanitiser, hair spray and bobby pins might all come in useful for guests and can be stashed in a basket or box so that people can help themselves. For beach weddings, don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent when you’re shopping for wedding accessories. Pop a printed sign in a holder so guests know they can help themselves.
To earn extra bride brownie points, an emergency kit might also be appreciated in the ladies loo. A spot stain remover, safety pins and tape are all great for wardrobe malfunctions. A few pairs of nude tights and clear nail varnish for stopping ladders in their tracks could well save someone embarrassment.
Personalising The Space
Toilets in public halls can often be drab and uninspiring, so find ways to make them feel cosier and more comfortable. Buy a few cheap plain white hand towels and flannels that you can take away after the event. Bring your own good-quality toilet roll, soap, hand cream and light scented candles, and add flowers. If your venue doesn’t allow candles, a scented room spray can make a huge difference. Squeeze a chair into a corner of the ladies’ restroom if you can, too; your bridesmaids will thank you for it!
